I went into stealth mode, employing every skill and ability I could. Or at least every one I could safely perform without disrupting the subspace sensors I knew Professor Mong had only several hundred meters away in the command building.

I slipped behind a tree, pushing myself low and pushing my senses out at the same time.

Half closing my eyes, I got a ready reading of everybody around me in a half-kilometer radius. I could hear them, feel them, practically see them. Their subtle electromagnetic currents zipped over my tongue and tingled up my back.

After several moments, I pushed up.

I’d seen the building Jason had disappeared into, and I knew now was a good chance to explore the rest of it while the White Wings were being enchanted by Logan’s proselytizing.

Shifting to another tree, I pushed my senses out once more.

I was looking for a break. Looking for a chance.

It was inherently risky to subspace jump out here in the open. I could be seen by somebody, or recorded by equipment, or maybe even picked up by somebody’s visual scanner. Yet the risk was worth it, especially if I could control that risk.

With one more careful check over my shoulder, I brought my hand around. I let the fingers press hard into my flesh as I concentrated. I sent an arc of energy rippling through every cell and tissue, touching me down to the bone.

I could send out a charge on the subspace spectrum, which would interfere with electronic equipment in a certain radius.

I’d done the same thing during the Hendra incident.

Now it was time to do it again.

Making sure the bulk of my form and the tree hid the light, I sent the pulse spinning into the air, whips of energy arcing out of my palm and dancing through the night.

Suddenly, the lights along the laneway far to my left stopped.

They fizzled out with a hiss.

Half closing my eyes, I pushed my senses out again, checking to ensure that my interference was complete.

After several seconds of checking, I could no longer sense any electronic interference.

Satisfied, I pulled myself from the shadow of the tree.

I had picked this tree specifically and had nestled myself close to the trunk. I knew there was no single vantage from anywhere on the Academy grounds – even on top of one of the buildings – that would afford anyone a view of my current position. There was a closely huddled copse of trees all around me, and their dense foliage would hide me completely.

Now I’d dealt with anything non-biological that could be spying on me, it was time to enact the second part of my plan. Angling my head beyond the safety of the tree, I spied the building, then quickly ducked back into cover.

Closing my eyes fully now, I kept an exact picture of the building in my head.

I’d already memorized the blueprints of every building on campus, and I knew the storage hangar before me had several rooms at the back.

That’s where I’d begin my investigation.
